Education in Huntsville and Madison County

Huntsville District No. 1

On November 13, 1868, County Judge G. W. Vaughan ordered the first school districts erected in the county. Huntsville No. 1 was the first district created during this term of the county court. However, the aftermath of the Civil War had left its toll on the county and the schools were slow to organize and due to the lack of adequate financial resources, schools were held only for short and indeterminate sessions with only a few students enrolled in school.

This year, the Huntsville School District expects to enroll 2,475 students in grades K - 12.
